We’re Moving: Massage Therapy in Sissinghurst: BodyTherapy.Health's New Location

I’m excited to share that from Tuesday 23 April 2025, my home clinic for BodyTherapy.Health will be relocating to a new space in the beautiful village of Sissinghurst, Kent.


If you’ve visited me before, you’ll still be able to book appointments at the current location right up until the move. After 23 April, all home clinic sessions will take place in Sissinghurst.


A New Chapter in a Peaceful Village


Sissinghurst is a welcoming and tranquil village in the heart of Kent. Known for its charming character and green surroundings, it offers the perfect setting to continue providing one-to-one massage therapy and auricular acupuncture in a calm, supportive environment.


The new clinic space will continue to reflect the values at the heart of BodyTherapy.Health — a place to pause, reset, and feel supported.


Parking Information


Parking at the new location is simple, with just a couple of things to keep in mind:

• You are welcome to park on the curbside directly outside the house

• Please do not block the driveway or any neighbours’ driveways

• You can also park further up Hovendens along the side of the road, which is just a one-minute walk from the house

  • What techniques are used?
    Over the years James has developed his own special and high quality treatment that is tailored to your specific needs. James will use a combination of the following modalities; Neuromuscular Technique (also known as Trigger Point Therapy) Soft Tissue Release Deep Tissue MassageSwedish Massage Muscle Energy Technique Friction Positional Release Technique Stretching Myofascial Release Medical Acupuncture General Stretching Dry Cupping IASTM (instrument assisted soft tissue mobilisation) Massage Gun Red Light Therapy
  • When not to get a massage?
    We know that life can be challenging and it can throw various things at you which make you unhappy, uncomfortable or in pain. Depending on what is causing this we will always try and help but sometimes we will have to say that we're unable to treat you. You might need time to heal first, or we might feel that it’s not within our experience level but, we promise to never leave you in the lurch. If requried, we will always refer you to a group of professionals we trust and even use ourselves. Massage treatment is non-invasive, relaxing and natural. It is therefore generally considered a safe treatment for most people. However, there are three types of contraindication: Total - when massage should not be performed at all. Local - when massage can be performed but not over the contraindicated areas. Medical - when massage can only be performed once medical permission has been granted. Total Contraindications When you have any of these, please do not book a massage. If you have developed any of these following making a booking please contact us before you attend: Fever Contagious diseases, including any cold or flu, no matter how mild it may seem Under the influence of drugs or alcohol-including prescription pain medication Recent operations or acute injuries Neuritis Skin diseases Local Contraindications We will be able to peform massage but not over any areas affected by: Varicose veins Undiagnosed lumps or bumps Pregnancy from 1st trimester onwards Bruising Cuts Abrasions Sunburn Undiagnosed pain Inflammation, including arthritis Medical Contraindications If you suffer from any of the following conditions, massage can only take place once it has been approved before your session in writing by your GP. Cardio-vascular conditions (thrombosis, phlebitis, hypertension, heart conditions) Any condition already being treated by a medical practitioner Oedema Psoriasis or eczema High blood pressure Osteoporosis Cancer Nervous or psychotic conditions Heart problems, angina, those with pacemakers Epilepsy Diabetes Bell’s palsy, trapped or pinched nerves Gynecological infections Does a contraindication mean that treatment cannot take place? Not always. In fact, massage can be very therapeutic for many medical conditions. However, in the above cases it is best to have advice from your GP.   • Is Deep Tissue or Sports Massage painful?
    Most people think sports or deep tissue massage is or should be painful. Myself and many others tend to disagree on this and we want to avoid pain at all costs. As soon as you are in pain your body becomes tense and all the work we’ve done together will go to waste. Throughout the treatment I will make sure we discuss the pressure that’s being applied and how you are feeling about it. For those of you that suffer from chronic pain and aching I do also have a gentle, intuitive touch so I can work with you. Sometimes people wonder why a therapist is treating an area that they think isn't affected. Well, stubborn, mysterious pain is often caused by knots - trigger-points - in nearby muscles that don't themselves hurt (or at least not until you press on them). So, knee pain may be caused by trigger-points in the thighs, low back pain by trigger-points in the glutes, neck pain by trigger-points in the back, etc.
  • Do you offer Swedish Massages?
    Yes, as part of my Soft Tissue Therapy I combine a variety of techniques, including Swedish Massage strokes, into your treatment. Each massage treatment is tailored to your specific and personal needs.
  • Do you provide a full body massage?
    Yes, I do offer full body massages. A full body massage is a massage that covers all of the major muscle groups in the body. It is a great way to relax and de-stress, and it can also help to improve circulation, reduce pain, and boost your overall mood.
  • Tell me more about medical acupuncture?
    James Hurst is qualified in Medical Acupuncture but this service is currently unavailable from his Home Clinic in Goudhurst. Stimulation of Acupuncture points activate the nerves and send impulses to the brain and body's defence system causing them to release different bio chemicals. This start the process of healing and the balance in the body. This stimulate the general health and wellbeing, not only relieving the symptoms but also correcting the root of the problems. How many treatments will I need? This depends on your condition and how you respond to treatment. Each client is different and each response rate is different depending on the condition. Is it painful when the needles are inserted? The needles commonly used in Medical Acupuncture are very thin and usually painless when inserted. You may experience a slight tingling. However once they are in place, you should not feel them. Most of our patients say they feel relaxed, uplifted and positive whilst having their Acupuncture treatments. When will l start to see an improvement? This depends on your condition. For example with musculoskeletal pain improvement is usually rapid. with the other conditions such as depression, improvements usually built gently from treatment to treatment. Will I need to continue with treatment to remain symptom free? Once your course of treatment has concluded and your health has improved, you may need 'top up' Medical Acupuncture treatment. James will advise you if this is the case. Can anyone have Medical Acupuncture? Yes, but there are certain health conditions that may stop you receiving acupuncture or mean that the treatment should be used with caution. It is important to let your therapist know: If you have ever experienced a fit, seizure, faint or if you have epilepsy; If you have a pacemaker or any other electrical implant; If you have a bleeding disorder e.g. haemophilia; If you are taking anti-coagulants or any other medication; If you have damage to heart valves, or have any risk of active infections; If you are pregnant or trying to conceive; If you have a known metal allergy – specifically to stainless steel; If you have a needle phobia; If you have a known infection or poor skin condition in the area to be treated; If you have a deficient or weakened immune system; If you have diabetes; If you have low blood pressure; If you have been prescribed any medicine; If you have cold/flu symptoms or feel generally unwell.
  • I'm suffering with?
    Are you suffering with any of the following? Back and hip pain Neck and shoulder pain/stiffness Knee and ankle pain Chronic muscular aches and pains General stress and tension Specific sporting injuries Then massage therapy will definitely be able to help
  • What is Sports Massage?
    Sports massage is a type of massage therapy which aims to reduce pain, increase flexibility, aid healing and can prepare athletes for sports. James likes to dispel the myth that Sports massage is only for sports people but it's actually for anyone! It can help relieve and relax tightened or injured muscles for all different types of people. Techniques such as MET (muscular energy techniques), STR (soft tissue release), myofascial release, frictions and trigger point therapy along with various strokes are used to manipulate the tissues, thus aiding quicker recovery and reduced pain. This treatment is a deep tissue treatment, so expect there to be some discomfort during the massage but it shouldn't be painful. Sometimes clients feel a little sore the next day but this is a common reaction to deep tissue work.
  • What is the difference between sports massage and Thai massage?
    Sports massage is a type of massage that focuses on the muscles and soft tissues of the body. It is often used to improve performance, recovery, and prevent injuries. Thai massage is a type of massage that uses pressure points and stretches to improve flexibility and range of motion. It is often used to relieve pain and stress.
  • Why don't you offer Thai massage?
    I am a sports massage therapist and I am not trained in Thai massage. Thai massage is a specialised technique that requires extensive training. I am confident that I can provide you with the best possible sports massage, and I do offer stretches as part of my treatment.
  • Do you use a massage gun?
    No, I do not use a massage gun during treatments. While these devices have gained popularity, the evidence supporting their effectiveness is limited, and they can be risky if used incorrectly, especially around sensitive areas like the neck. Massage guns might feel good temporarily, but they do not replace skilled, hands-on therapy. My focus is on manual techniques that are precise, safe, and tailored to your needs. Why pay for professional expertise only to have a device do the work? I believe in using my training and experience to provide a personalised treatment that delivers meaningful results, not quick fixes. When you come to see me, you are investing in a thoughtful and professional approach, not shortcuts.
  • What is sports massage therapy, and how can it benefit me?
    Sports massage therapy involves the manipulation of soft tissues to enhance performance, aid recovery, and prevent injury. It can alleviate muscle tension, improve flexibility, and reduce the risk of injury.
  • How does myofascial release differ from traditional massage?
    Myofascial release focuses on relieving tension in the fascia, the connective tissue surrounding muscles, using gentle & sustained pressure. Unlike traditional massage, which often targets muscles directly, myofascial release aims to improve flexibility and reduce pain by addressing fascial restrictions.
  • What conditions can medical acupuncture (dry needling) help treat?
    Medical acupuncture, or dry needling, can effectively treat musculoskeletal pain, including back pain, neck pain, and sports injuries. It works by stimulating the body’s healing processes and reducing muscle tension.
  • Is auricular acupuncture effective for stress and anxiety?
    Yes, auricular acupuncture targets specific points on the ear to help alleviate stress, anxiety, and related conditions. It’s a complementary therapy that can support overall well-being.
  • How should I prepare for my first therapy session?
    Wear comfortable clothing and ensure you’re well-hydrated.
  • Do I need a referral from a GP to book a session?
    No, you can book a session directly without a referral. However, if you have specific medical conditions, it’s advisable to consult your GP beforehand.
  • What should I wear for my appointment?
    It’s best to wear loose, comfortable clothing. Depending on the treatment, you may be asked to remove some clothing, but your privacy and comfort will always be respected. James will work with your comfort level.
  • Can these therapies be combined in a single session?
    Yes, James combines therapies like sports massage, myofascial release, and acupuncture as they can be beneficial. James will discuss this with you and tailor the session to your specific needs.
  • How many sessions will I need before noticing improvements?
    The number of sessions varies depending on individual needs and conditions. Some clients experience relief after one session, while others may require multiple sessions for optimal results.
  • Are there any side effects associated with these therapies?
    Most clients experience minimal side effects, such as mild soreness or fatigue, which typically subside within a day. James will discuss any potential side effects during your session.
  • Do you have experience working with specific conditions or injuries?
    Yes, I have worked with clients experiencing a range of conditions, including sports injuries, chronic pain, stress, and anxiety. I tailor each session to the individual’s needs and goals.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
    If you need to cancel or reschedule, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations within 24 hours may incur a fee.
  • I’ve just had open-heart surgery. Can I have a massage?
    If you’ve recently had open-heart surgery, it’s important to to receive clearance for massage therapy from your medical team. Once approved, I can provide a gentle and tailored treatment plan to support your recovery. You will most likely receive treatment in a side-lying position avoiding lying on your front or back. Please share your medical history and any specific concerns before booking a session.
  • Will one massage be enough to help me feel better?
    It’s a great question, and the honest answer is that it varies from person to person. Some people feel noticeable relief straight after a session. Others notice the benefits unfolding over the next few days. For some, it takes a series of sessions to achieve longer-lasting improvements. It really depends on what is happening for you, whether it is something chronic, occasional, or more complex. The best approach is to chat with me about what is going on and what you are hoping for. I can help you understand what to expect and recommend the best course of action. Whether you choose a one-off session or decide to book in regularly, the important thing is finding what works for you. I also offer packages and memberships if ongoing treatments feel like the right fit. Whatever you decide, I am here to support you.
  • Arriving & Starting your appointment
    James looks forward to seeing you but please do make sure you turn up for your exact booked time only as there is no waiting area. If you're arriving by car please park in front of the garage doors. I'm happy for you to wait on the drive in your car if you're no more than 15 minutes early. James will then take you to the Home Clinic Room, a comfortable space where a padded, warm treatment couch and clean towels have been prepared. During the colder months you can request that the bed heater be turned down or off, no problem! James will have a brief conversation with you before asking you to lie on the table, and explain which towel to cover yourself with, before he then leaves the room and waits outside to allow you to undress to your own personal comfort. (Clients preferences vary, with some preferring to be partially clothed, most just their underwear, and some completely disrobed). All are fine with James. You will always be covered with the top towel during your massage session and an additional blanket will be used to keep you warm. The process James will follow is to only uncover the part of the body he is working on, ensuring that your modesty is 100% respected at all times. You can use the side table for your personal belongings and a hanger on the back of the door for your your clothes. The music will be relaxing but can be turned down if you prefer. During your treatment James will check-in with you on a regular basis about pressure and temperature control. Apart from that the sessions can be held in silence or if you wish to talk feel free. Whatever you feel more comfortable doing.
  • How to get the most out of your treatment?
    Communication is key – let your therapist know what is working for you and what isn’t. Are you comfortable? Is the temperature right for you? Are they applying the right amount of pressure? This is your treatment and your time so make it worthwhile. We're here to help you so let’s make it the best experience for you.
  • What payment options do you have?
    You may pay by cash or card. At my Home Clinic I use SquareUK for all card payments including American Express, Visa & Mastercard.
  • What is your cancellation policy?
    Before booking, please be aware that re-scheduled, cancelled or non-attended appointments will be charged at the full amount unless 24 hours prior notice is provided.
  • During your appointment
    The best way to get the most from your session is to talk with James about what you like or don’t like. It’s not necessary to chat throughout (many people prefer just to switch off and say nothing) but you should let your therapist know if you have aches or pains in any area and they can give this specific attention. One of James's Golden Rules is that at any time, if there is anything that does not feel comfortable or right or you do not like, you have the right to ask James to stop. To mitigate this, throughout the session, you will be asked if the level of pressure is ok, and you should take this opportunity to communicate the level in which you feel comfortable, asking for more or less. Before beginning the session, James will ask you to alert him if, at any time during the session, a technique he is using is uncomfortable. Depending on your specific needs or requests, James will either perform a customised full-body massage (for general relaxation and stress reduction) or focus on the specific parts of your body that you have requested. James uses only the highest quality hypoallergenic massage oils and lotions for your massage.
  • What type of clients do you see?
    Here at Body Therapy Health we are an inclusive practice and will treat you regardless of colour, creed, race, age, gender, job title, religious beliefs and identity.   • What is your address?
    My Home Clinic, where I provide Sports Massage treatment, is 1 New Cottages, Mile Lane, Goudhurst, Cranbrook, Kent TN17 2NU. Please be advised to not just use the postcode. This will take you down the end of the lane away from your final destination.   • Why do some places charge £40 for a massage while I charge more?
    It’s a fair question, and the simple answer is that my approach to massage is built on experience, expertise, and quality. I have spent years training, honing my skills, and deepening my understanding of the body to offer treatments that are tailored, thoughtful, and effective. Many lower-cost massage providers keep their prices down by employing newly qualified therapists who are building experience, running back-to-back appointments, and offering 50 minutes of hands-on time instead of a full hour. Those setups can also focus more on volume than creating a personalised experience. I work differently. I control how I practice, giving myself the time and space to focus on each client without rushing. When you book with me, you are investing in a treatment with someone who is highly qualified, passionate about their craft, and dedicated to helping you feel your best. Just like there is room in the world for fast food and fine dining, there is space for entry-level massage and master-level massage. I aim to offer the latter, expert treatments that are accessible to those who value the difference.
  • Are you mobile?
    At the moment James doesn't offer mobile massage treatments but make sure you sign up to our newsletter to ensure you don't miss out on any news or changes to services and special offers we run.

  • Where do you provide your massage treatment?
    I treat all my clients at my cosy Home Clinic in Sissinghurst. It's not far from Cranbrook and the nearest stations are Marden or Staplehurst about a 10 minute drive. I have clients who travel from as close as Horsmenden and as far as Tenderden and Tunbridge Wells.
  • I see that you do massage at work. Can I book you to come to my office?
    Yes of course. I have special rates for visiting clients at work, This is usually for a set amount of time ie 4 hours and the employer decides how to structure the time ie 30m or 45m sessions However, you must first clear this with your HR Department or Manager, if they need to contact me for insurance information, please ask them to contact me via my e-mail address james@bodytherapy.health.   • Do you offer Sports Massage near me?
    James is based in Sissinghurst which is close to Cranbrook, Staplehurst, Hawkhurst and Maidstone.
  • Why are you no longer providing massage in London?
    I am now based in Sissinghurst in Kent, near Staplehurst and Cranbrook. I am unable to travel to London to provide massages.
