Grief isn’t just emotional. It’s physical too.
It can show up in your back, your sleep, your chest, or your appetite. Sometimes you feel heavy and slow. Other times disconnected and wired. That is part of grieving.
Whether it is the loss of a person, a relationship, or a version of your life, grief can leave you drained. This is where massage for grief can offer support.

A client session that stayed with me
A few days after their partner’s funeral, a client came to see me. They had booked for back pain, but I could feel the weight of everything as soon as I opened the door. Their body was tense. Their energy was low. They looked like they were holding everything in.
We talked briefly. Then we began the massage. It took time for their body to soften. The tension was not just muscular. It was emotional. Layered. Held deeply.
Eventually there was a shift. Not a big one, but enough to see their breathing change. Enough to notice something release. This was not about fixing anything. It was about creating space where they did not have to keep it all together.
Grief is not a disorder, a disease or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love. The only cure for grief is to grieve | E. Grollman
What changed during the session
After a short conversation, we moved straight into treatment. They were receptive to the work, but it took time to relax. Only then could I feel their body start to let go of tension and some of the grief they were carrying. It was moving to witness how massage can support someone in such profound pain.
As I worked, I felt a connection that went beyond the physical. My role was to provide a safe space for emotion to move. I could feel the trust in that room. It was an honour to support them.
Massage for Grief: Providing Comfort, Release, and Connection
From personal and professional experience, massage can be a valuable support during grief. It can offer comfort and safety, help release tension and stress, improve sleep quality, and restore a sense of connection.

Alleviating Physical Symptoms and Navigating Emotional Pain
Grief often shows up as headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, and poor sleep. These symptoms can make the emotional pain harder to carry. Massage can ease physical symptoms and provide relief, which makes the emotional load easier to navigate. Massage can also help reconnect how the brain and body communicate during stress and pain.
Grief can be isolating. Many people feel cut off from others. Massage can offer human connection in a safe, steady way, where you can feel seen and not have to explain everything.
How I work with grief
Everyone grieves differently. There is no one size fits all approach to massage, especially for grief. Some clients want very gentle work. Others prefer firmer work to release tension. I adapt to what you need and how you feel on the day. We decide together.
