We know that life can be challenging and it can throw various things at you which make you unhappy, uncomfortable or in pain. Depending on what is causing this we will always try and help but sometimes we will have to say that we're unable to treat you.

You might need time to heal first, or we might feel that it’s not within our experience level but, we promise to never leave you in the lurch. If requried, we will always refer you to a group of professionals we trust and even use ourselves. Massage treatment is non-invasive, relaxing and natural. It is therefore generally considered a safe treatment for most people. However, there are three types of contraindication: Total - when massage should not be performed at all. Local - when massage can be performed but not over the contraindicated areas. Medical - when massage can only be performed once medical permission has been granted. Total Contraindications When you have any of these, please do not book a massage. If you have developed any of these following making a booking please contact us before you attend:

Fever
Contagious diseases, including any cold or flu, no matter how mild it may seem
Under the influence of drugs or alcohol-including prescription pain medication
Recent operations or acute injuries
Neuritis
Skin diseases

Local Contraindications We will be able to peform massage but not over any areas affected by:

Varicose veins
Undiagnosed lumps or bumps
Pregnancy from 1st trimester onwards
Bruising
Cuts
Abrasions
Sunburn
Undiagnosed pain
Inflammation, including arthritis

Medical Contraindications If you suffer from any of the following conditions, massage can only take place once it has been approved before your session in writing by your GP.

Cardio-vascular conditions (thrombosis, phlebitis, hypertension, heart conditions)
Any condition already being treated by a medical practitioner
Oedema
Psoriasis or eczema
High blood pressure
Osteoporosis
Cancer
Nervous or psychotic conditions
Heart problems, angina, those with pacemakers
Epilepsy
Diabetes
Bell’s palsy, trapped or pinched nerves
Gynecological infections

Does a contraindication mean that treatment cannot take place? Not always. In fact, massage can be very therapeutic for many medical conditions. However, in the above cases it is best to have advice from your GP. If you have further questions or concerns about booking a treatment, please contact us direct.

Most people think sports or deep tissue massage is or should be painful. Myself and many others tend to disagree on this and we want to avoid pain at all costs. As soon as you are in pain your body becomes tense and all the work we’ve done together will go to waste. Throughout the treatment I will make sure we discuss the pressure that’s being applied and how you are feeling about it. For those of you that suffer from chronic pain and aching I do also have a gentle, intuitive touch so I can work with you. Sometimes people wonder why a therapist is treating an area that they think isn't affected. Well, stubborn, mysterious pain is often caused by knots - trigger-points - in nearby muscles that don't themselves hurt (or at least not until you press on them). So, knee pain may be caused by trigger-points in the thighs, low back pain by trigger-points in the glutes, neck pain by trigger-points in the back, etc.

Yes, as part of my Soft Tissue Therapy I combine a variety of techniques, including Swedish Massage strokes, into your treatment. Each massage treatment is tailored to your specific and personal needs.

Yes, I do offer full body massages. A full body massage is a massage that covers all of the major muscle groups in the body. It is a great way to relax and de-stress, and it can also help to improve circulation, reduce pain, and boost your overall mood.

How does Medical Acupuncture work?

Stimulation of Acupuncture points activate the nerves and send impulses to the brain and body's defence system causing them to release different bio chemicals. This start the process of healing and the balance in the body. This stimulate the general health and wellbeing, not only relieving the symptoms but also correcting the root of the problems.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on your condition and how you respond to treatment. Each client is different and each response rate is different depending on the condition.

Is it painful when the needles are inserted?

The needles commonly used in Medical Acupuncture are very thin and usually painless when inserted.

You may experience a slight tingling. However once they are in place, you should not feel them. Most of our patients say they feel relaxed, uplifted and positive whilst having their Acupuncture treatments.

When will l start to see an improvement?

This depends on your condition. For example with musculoskeletal pain improvement is usually rapid. with the other conditions such as depression, improvements usually built gently from treatment to treatment.

Will I need to continue with treatment to remain symptom free?

Once your course of treatment has concluded and your health has improved, you may need 'top up' Medical Acupuncture treatment. James will advise you if this is the case.

Can anyone have Medical Acupuncture?

Yes, but there are certain health conditions that may stop you receiving acupuncture or mean that the treatment should be used with caution. It is important to let your therapist know:

If you have ever experienced a fit, seizure, faint or if you have epilepsy;
If you have a pacemaker or any other electrical implant;
If you have a bleeding disorder e.g. haemophilia;
If you are taking anti-coagulants or any other medication;
If you have damage to heart valves, or have any risk of active infections;
If you are pregnant or trying to conceive;
If you have a known metal allergy – specifically to stainless steel;
If you have a needle phobia;
If you have a known infection or poor skin condition in the area to be treated;
If you have a deficient or weakened immune system;
If you have diabetes;
If you have low blood pressure;
If you have been prescribed any medicine;
If you have cold/flu symptoms or feel generally unwell.

Sports massage is a type of massage therapy which aims to reduce pain, increase flexibility, aid healing and can prepare athletes for sports.

James likes to dispel the myth that Sports massage is only for sports people but it's actually for anyone!

It can help relieve and relax tightened or injured muscles for all different types of people. Techniques such as MET (muscular energy techniques), STR (soft tissue release), myofascial release, frictions and trigger point therapy along with various strokes are used to manipulate the tissues, thus aiding quicker recovery and reduced pain.

This treatment is a deep tissue treatment, so expect there to be some discomfort during the massage but it shouldn't be painful. Sometimes clients feel a little sore the next day but this is a common reaction to deep tissue work.

Sports massage is a type of massage that focuses on the muscles and soft tissues of the body. It is often used to improve performance, recovery, and prevent injuries. Thai massage is a type of massage that uses pressure points and stretches to improve flexibility and range of motion. It is often used to relieve pain and stress.

I am a sports massage therapist and I am not trained in Thai massage. Thai massage is a specialised technique that requires extensive training. I am confident that I can provide you with the best possible sports massage, and I do offer stretches as part of my treatment.

No, I do not use a massage gun during treatments. While these devices have gained popularity, the evidence supporting their effectiveness is limited, and they can be risky if used incorrectly, especially around sensitive areas like the neck.

Massage guns might feel good temporarily, but they do not replace skilled, hands-on therapy. My focus is on manual techniques that are precise, safe, and tailored to your needs. Why pay for professional expertise only to have a device do the work? I believe in using my training and experience to provide a personalised treatment that delivers meaningful results, not quick fixes.

If you need to cancel or reschedule, please provide at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations within 24 hours may incur a fee.

If you’ve recently had open-heart surgery, it’s important to to receive clearance for massage therapy from your medical team. Once approved, I can provide a gentle and tailored treatment plan to support your recovery. You will most likely receive treatment in a side-lying position avoiding lying on your front or back.

Others notice the benefits unfolding over the next few days. For some, it takes a series of sessions to achieve longer-lasting improvements. So here’s a simple guide to help you understand the difference between general massage and sports massage — and figure out which one you might need.

What is general massage?

General massage is usually what people think of when they picture a relaxing treatment. Often done in a spa setting, it might include gentle pressure, soothing music, and a focus on stress relief and overall calm. It can be a lovely way to switch off - but it’s not always aimed at fixing specific issues.

What is sports massage?

Sports massage is more targeted. It’s designed to help with physical tension, injury recovery, posture, movement, and mobility. It’s not just for athletes. The “sports” part refers more to the techniques used than who it’s for.

I often use sports massage to help with:

• Sore shoulders or necks from desk work

• Lower back pain

• Tight hips or hamstrings

• Ongoing stiffness or old injuries

• Muscle recovery after activity or training

Is sports massage more painful?

It can go deeper, but it shouldn’t feel like punishment. The aim is to work with your body, not against it. I check in throughout, and the pressure is always adjusted based on what you need that day. You’re not there to grit your teeth and survive it. You’re there to feel better.

Can I book a mix of both?

Absolutely. Some sessions might be focused more on deep release and recovery, while others lean into calm, restorative work. Every session is tailored to what’s going on for you, and we decide together what’s most useful.

That’s completely normal. You don’t need to come in with the right label. You just need to show up. I’ll ask a few questions, do a quick check-in, and we’ll figure it out from there.
