Pausing all treatments

Following on from my recent message about ‘business as usual’ I am now moving forward with increased awareness of the new and developing guidance, and understand the messaging coming in from various bodies about the scale of this virus and the impact its having on our community and the world at large.

I have therefore decided for BodyTherapy.Health to take a pause, a breath from the uncertainty and any potential risk to the health of myself, my clients and those around us.

This is not closure as I’m sure I will be back and I look forward to welcoming you back too.

What techniques are used?

Over the years James has developed his own special and high quality treatment that is tailored to your specific needs. When not to get a massage?

We know that life can be challenging and it can throw various things at you which make you unhappy, uncomfortable or in pain. Depending on what is causing this we will always try and help but sometimes we will have to say that we're unable to treat you. You might need time to heal first, or we might feel that it’s not within our experience level but, we promise to never leave you in the lurch. If requried, we will always refer you to a group of professionals we trust and even use ourselves. Massage treatment is non-invasive, relaxing and natural. It is therefore generally considered a safe treatment for most people. However, there are three types of contraindication: Total - when massage should not be performed at all. Local - when massage can be performed but not over the contraindicated areas. Medical - when massage can only be performed once medical permission has been granted. Total Contraindications When you have any of these, please do not book a massage. If you have developed any of these following making a booking please contact us before you attend: Fever Contagious diseases, including any cold or flu, no matter how mild it may seem Under the influence of drugs or alcohol-including prescription pain medication Recent operations or acute injuries Neuritis Skin diseases Local Contraindications We will be able to peform massage but not over any areas affected by: Varicose veins Undiagnosed lumps or bumps Pregnancy from 1st trimester onwards Bruising Cuts Abrasions Sunburn Undiagnosed pain Inflammation, including arthritis Medical Contraindications If you suffer from any of the following conditions, massage can only take place once it has been approved before your session in writing by your GP. Cardio-vascular conditions (thrombosis, phlebitis, hypertension, heart conditions) Any condition already being treated by a medical practitioner Oedema Psoriasis or eczema High blood pressure Osteoporosis Cancer Nervous or psychotic conditions Heart problems, angina, those with pacemakers Epilepsy Diabetes Bell’s palsy, trapped or pinched nerves Gynecological infections Does a contraindication mean that treatment cannot take place? Not always. In fact, massage can be very therapeutic for many medical conditions. However, in the above cases it is best to have advice from your GP. Is Deep Tissue or Sports Massage painful?

Most people think sports or deep tissue massage is or should be painful. Myself and many others tend to disagree on this and we want to avoid pain at all costs. As soon as you are in pain your body becomes tense and all the work we’ve done together will go to waste. Throughout the treatment I will make sure we discuss the pressure that’s being applied and how you are feeling about it. For those of you that suffer from chronic pain and aching I do also have a gentle, intuitive touch so I can work with you. Sometimes people wonder why a therapist is treating an area that they think isn't affected. Well, stubborn, mysterious pain is often caused by knots - trigger-points - in nearby muscles that don't themselves hurt (or at least not until you press on them). So, knee pain may be caused by trigger-points in the thighs, low back pain by trigger-points in the glutes, neck pain by trigger-points in the back, etc.
Do you offer Swedish Massages?

Yes, as part of my Soft Tissue Therapy I combine a variety of techniques, including Swedish Massage strokes, into your treatment. Each massage treatment is tailored to your specific and personal needs.
Do you provide a full body massage?

Yes, I do offer full body massages. A full body massage is a massage that covers all of the major muscle groups in the body. It is a great way to relax and de-stress, and it can also help to improve circulation, reduce pain, and boost your overall mood.
Tell me more about medical acupuncture?

James Hurst is qualified in Medical Acupuncture but this service is currently unavailable from his Home Clinic in Goudhurst. Stimulation of Acupuncture points activate the nerves and send impulses to the brain and body's defence system causing them to release different bio chemicals. This start the process of healing and the balance in the body. This stimulate the general health and wellbeing, not only relieving the symptoms but also correcting the root of the problems. How many treatments will I need? This depends on your condition and how you respond to treatment. Each client is different and each response rate is different depending on the condition. Is it painful when the needles are inserted? The needles commonly used in Medical Acupuncture are very thin and usually painless when inserted. You may experience a slight tingling. However once they are in place, you should not feel them. Most of our patients say they feel relaxed, uplifted and positive whilst having their Acupuncture treatments. When will l start to see an improvement? This depends on your condition. For example with musculoskeletal pain improvement is usually rapid. with the other conditions such as depression, improvements usually built gently from treatment to treatment. Will I need to continue with treatment to remain symptom free? Once your course of treatment has concluded and your health has improved, you may need 'top up' Medical Acupuncture treatment. James will advise you if this is the case. Can anyone have Medical Acupuncture? Yes, but there are certain health conditions that may stop you receiving acupuncture or mean that the treatment should be used with caution. It is important to let your therapist know: If you have ever experienced a fit, seizure, faint or if you have epilepsy; If you have a pacemaker or any other electrical implant; If you have a bleeding disorder e.g. haemophilia; If you are taking anti-coagulants or any other medication; If you have damage to heart valves, or have any risk of active infections; If you are pregnant or trying to conceive; If you have a known metal allergy – specifically to stainless steel; If you have a needle phobia; If you have a known infection or poor skin condition in the area to be treated; If you have a deficient or weakened immune system; If you have diabetes; If you have low blood pressure; If you have been prescribed any medicine; If you have cold/flu symptoms or feel generally unwell.

What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a type of massage therapy which aims to reduce pain, increase flexibility, aid healing and can prepare athletes for sports. James likes to dispel the myth that Sports massage is only for sports people but it's actually for anyone! It can help relieve and relax tightened or injured muscles for all different types of people. Techniques such as MET (muscular energy techniques), STR (soft tissue release), myofascial release, frictions and trigger point therapy along with various strokes are used to manipulate the tissues, thus aiding quicker recovery and reduced pain. This treatment is a deep tissue treatment, so expect there to be some discomfort during the massage but it shouldn't be painful. Sometimes clients feel a little sore the next day but this is a common reaction to deep tissue work.
What is the difference between sports massage and Thai massage?

Sports massage is a type of massage that focuses on the muscles and soft tissues of the body. It is often used to improve performance, recovery, and prevent injuries. Thai massage is a type of massage that uses pressure points and stretches to improve flexibility and range of motion. It is often used to relieve pain and stress.
Why don't you offer Thai massage?

I am a sports massage therapist and I am not trained in Thai massage. Thai massage is a specialised technique that requires extensive training. I am confident that I can provide you with the best possible sports massage, and I do offer stretches as part of my treatment.
Do you use a massage gun?

Yes, I do use a massage gun (Also known as a 'deep massager') as part of my massage therapy, but very rarely. I believe that hands-on massage is still the best way to provide deep tissue relief and relaxation. However, a massage gun can be a helpful tool for targeting specific areas of tension or pain. I may use a massage gun for a few minutes at the beginning or end of a massage, or if a client has a specific area of pain that I want to address. There are also some potential drawbacks to using a massage gun, such as: It can be too intense for some people. It can cause bruising or irritation in sensitive areas Overall, I do believe that hands-on massage is still the best way to provide deep tissue relief and relaxation.
Arriving & Starting your appointment

James looks forward to seeing you but please do make sure you turn up for your exact booked time only as there is no waiting area. If you're arriving by car please park in front of the garage doors. I'm happy for you to wait on the drive in your car if you're no more than 15 minutes early. James will then take you to the Home Clinic Room, a comfortable space where a padded, warm treatment couch and clean towels have been prepared. During the colder months you can request that the bed heater be turned down or off, no problem! James will have a brief conversation with you before asking you to lie on the table, and which towel to cover yourself with, before he then leaves the room and waits outside to allow you to undress to your own personal comfort. (Clients preferences vary, with some preferring to be partially clothed, most just their underwear, and some completely disrobed). All are fine with James. You will always be covered with the top towel during your massage session and an additional blanket will be used to keep you warm. The process your James will follow is to only uncover the part of the body he is working on, ensuring that your modesty is 100% respected at all times. You can use the side table for your personal belongings and a hanger on the back of the door for your your clothes. The music will be relaxing but can be turned down if you prefer. During your treatment James will check-in with you on a regular basis about pressure and temperature control. Apart from that the sessions can be held in silence or if you wish to talk feel free. Whatever you feel more comfortable doing.
How to get the most out of your treatment?

Communication is key – let your therapist know what is working for you and what isn’t. Are you comfortable? Is the temperature right for you? Are they applying the right amount of pressure? This is your treatment and your time so make it worthwhile. We're here to help you so let’s make it the best experience for you.
What payment options do you have?

You may pay by cash or card. At my Home Clinic I use SquareUK for all card payments including American Express, Visa & Mastercard.
What is your cancellation policy?

Before booking, please be aware that re-scheduled, cancelled or non-attended appointments will be charged at the full amount unless 24 hours prior notice is provided.
During your appointment

The best way to get the most from your session is to talk with James about what you like or don’t like. It’s not necessary to chat throughout (many people prefer just to switch off and say nothing) but you should let your therapist know if you have aches or pains in any area and they can give this specific attention. One of James's Golden Rules is that at any time, if there is anything that does not feel comfortable or right or you do not like, you have the right to ask James to stop. To mitigate this, throughout the session, you will be asked if the level of pressure is ok, and you should take this opportunity to communicate the level in which you feel comfortable, asking for more or less. Before beginning the session, James will ask you to alert him if, at any time during the session, a technique he is using is uncomfortable. Depending on your specific needs or requests, James will either perform a customised full-body massage (for general relaxation and stress reduction) or focus on the specific parts of your body that you have requested. James uses only the highest quality hypoallergenic massage oils and lotions for your massage.
What type of clients do you see?

My Home Clinic, where I provide Sports Massage treatment, is 1 New Cottages, Mile Lane, Goudhurst, Cranbrook, Kent TN17 2NU. Please be advised to not just use the postcode. This will take you down the end of the lane away from your final destination. Where do you provide your massage treatment?

I treat all my clients at my cosy Home Clinic in Goudhurst. It's not far from Cranbrook and the nearest stations are Marden or Staplehurst about a 10 minute drive. I have clients who travel from as close as Horsmenden and as far as Tenderden and Tunbridge Wells.
I see that you do massage at work. Can I book you to come to my office?

Yes of course. I have special rates for visiting clients at work, This is usually for a set amount of time ie 4 hours and the employer decides how to structure the time ie 30m or 45m sessions However, you must first clear this with your HR Department or Manager, if they need to contact me for insurance information, please ask them to contact me via my e-mail address james@bodytherapy.health. Do you offer Sports Massage near me?

We're based in Goudhurst which is close to Cranbrook, Staplehurst, Hawkhurst, Marden, Kilndown, Sisinghurst and Tunbridge Wells.
Why are you no longer providing massage in London?

I am now based in Kent, near Marden, Goudhurst, Sissinghurst and Cranbrook. I am unable to travel to London to provide massages.
